Chalfonte Foundation Announces Inaugural Recipients of Joe Yuchasz Piano Scholarship

Elk Rapids, MI - March 12, 2024

The Chalfonte Foundation is proud to announce the first recipients of the Joe Yuchasz Piano Scholarship, Jane Larsen of Williamsburg, MI, and Louis Tulpa of Elk Rapids, MI. The scholarship covers the costs of piano lessons and culminates in a public recital at the Chalfonte Theatre, home of the Elk Rapids Cinema where Joe Yuchasz taught piano to children and youth for many years.

Jane Larsen is a 9-year-old currently in 3rd grade at Mill Creek Elementary School. Jane Larsen enjoys various sports and outdoor activities with her family. Introduced to the piano two years ago, Jane has adapted well to both virtual and in-person lessons, recognizing the value of technology while cherishing the personal connection of face-to-face instruction. The Joe Yuchasz Piano Scholarship presents Jane with the opportunity to transition to in-person training full time, a crucial step in her musical journey. "I'm glad Jane is able to participate in something like this. It’s such a cool opportunity. She's really excited." says her mother Katie Larson.

Louis Tulpa is an 11-year-old fifth grader at Lakeland Elementary School. Louis brings a rich cultural heritage and a deep love for music to the forefront. Born in the Amazon Jungle city of Iquitos, Peru, Louis's upbringing exposed him to the vibrant rhythms of Cumbia and Latin music, igniting his passion for musical exploration. With a natural aptitude for languages and a keen intellect, Louis seamlessly navigates between his academic pursuits and his musical endeavors, showcasing a remarkable commitment to his craft. “Louis is elated and thankful for the opportunity to participate in the Joe Yuchasz Piano Scholarship!” says his father Cliff Tulpa.

“As the first recipients of the Joe Yuchasz Piano Scholarship, Jane Larsen and Louis Tulpa embody the curiosity, imagination, and courage that the Chalfonte Foundation seeks to nurture,” says Aaron Timlin, President of the Chalfonte Foundation. “Their pursuit of music echoes Joe Yuchasz's dedication to music education for children and youth.”

Piano lessons will begin in late spring 2024 followed by a public recital to take place in late fall at the Chalfonte Theatre. To learn more about the Joe Yuchasz Piano Scholarship and other Chalfonte Foundation programs and initiatives, visit www.chalfonte.org.
